## Our take

Garmin built the Approach J1 to do one thing well: help a young golfer learn the game without a parent hovering over every yardage. It's the first GPS watch designed specifically for juniors, and the clever bit is 'tee-off guidance' — instead of a raw number to a flag a kid can't reach, it points them to the right forward tee for their ability on any of 43,000+ preloaded courses, so the round is fun rather than demoralising. Add a personal-par feature and a pace-of-play timer and it quietly teaches course management and etiquette. Physically it's a slim, light 43mm AMOLED touchscreen on a ComfortFit fabric strap that actually fits a smaller wrist and won't drag through the swing, with ~15 hours of GPS battery and light water resistance.
