# FlightScope i4 review: the smartest yardage in golf, and you'll be switching it off

Cold morning, flag 163 out, and the number in the eyepiece is completely true and almost useless. It is 163 to the stick. It is not playing 163, because the air is heavy, there is a breeze quartering off the left and the ground is soft enough that nothing is running. Every golfer in the country does that arithmetic in their head, and almost all of us do it badly, mostly by taking the club we wish we needed.

## Who should buy it

The golfer this is built for is easy to describe. They play most of their golf outside the competition calendar: practice rounds, roll-ups, society days, golf trips. They play somewhere the air is not the air their yardages were learned in, which in practice means altitude, exposed coastal wind, or a proper winter. And they are the sort of person who will sit down and do the gapping setup properly instead of typing in the distances they hit in 2019.

That last condition is the one people will skip and it is not optional. This is a device that rewards a bit of admin and punishes wishful thinking, which is a fair description of golf improvement generally.
