# Le Golf National hosts the Open de France this week, and its water-lined finish decides what goes in your bag

> The DP World Tour is at Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines from Thursday, on a course built out of flat farmland into an amphitheatre with water down the closing stretch. It is also one of the very few Ryder Cup venues the public can simply book — which makes what the Albatros asks of a visiting golfer worth spelling out.

## In short

- The FedEx Open de France runs 24-27 September 2026 at Le Golf National, Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, on the Albatros course that hosted the 2018 Ryder Cup and the 2024 Olympics — and which the public can book online, which almost no comparable venue allows. What the course asks of a visitor comes down to three things it was built with: it is a stadium layout with no tree cover, so take a quiet, packable shell and the waterproof trousers most people leave at home; it is flat and walkable with nowhere to shelter, so a seam-sealed carry bag beats a good bag with a rain hood; and water runs down the closing stretch at 15, 16 and 18, so bring more balls than you think and consider recovered premium ones rather than a fresh dozen. A laser is genuinely useful because the examination is carry over water. Being 30km from Paris means spikeless waterproof leather does double duty.

Watch the closing holes of a tournament at Le Golf National and you will see something that does not happen at most famous courses: a grandstand built into the land itself, rising out of what used to be a cornfield, with water in front of the golfer and several thousand people above and behind them. The Albatros was designed that way on purpose. Hubert Chesneau and Robert von Hagge opened it in 1990 on flat farmland south-west of Paris, and they shaped the spoil into amphitheatres because the French Golf Federation wanted a stadium, not a parkland course that happened to host things.

This week it does the job it was built for. The FedEx Open de France runs from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 September at Le Golf National in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, with a prize fund the DP World Tour lists at 3.75 million dollars. It is the same ground where Europe beat the United States 17 and a half to 10 and a half in the 2018 Ryder Cup, and where Olympic golf was decided in 2024.

And here is the part that separates this from every other course on that list. You can play it. Not through a member, not on a corporate day, not by writing a letter — the Albatros is owned by the federation and its tee times go online like anyone else's. We have the booking, the travel and the when-to-go detail in our [Le Golf National guide](https://ifrothgolf.com/travel/france/le-golf-national). This piece is the other half: what the course actually asks of a visiting golfer once you have got there.

## A stadium course is an exposed course

The thing that makes the Albatros brilliant to watch is the same thing that makes it hard to play, and nobody mentions the connection. A course engineered for spectators has no trees to speak of, because trees block sightlines. The mounding that gives the crowds their view also gives the wind a clean run at you. There is very little to hide behind out there, which is a lovely quality on television in September and a less lovely one in April when a northern-French front comes through at eleven in the morning.

So the first thing in the bag is a shell you can swing in and barely hear. Wind noise is the underrated misery of an exposed round — a stiff jacket that crackles on every backswing will cost you more shots than the weather it is keeping off. The [Sunderland Whisperdry Pro-Lite](https://ifrothgolf.com/product/sunderland-whisperdry-jacket) is built around exactly that complaint: a soft-touch four-way stretch shell rated to 8,000mm with sealed seams, light enough to live in the bottom of the bag until it is needed.

## The trousers are the half everybody skips

Here is the packing mistake visitors to northern France make, reliably, every autumn. They bring the jacket and they leave the trousers. It works right up until the moment it does not, and then you play the last six holes in wet denim-weight fabric clinging to your thighs, which is the single fastest way to stop caring about a bucket-list round.

Waterproof trousers used to deserve their reputation — heavy, loud, and cut as though golfers do not rotate. The [FootJoy HydroTour](https://ifrothgolf.com/product/footjoy-hydrotour-waterproof-trousers) pair is the current answer to that: a 20,000mm rating on three-layer stretch construction, with leg zips so you can get them on over shoes without sitting down on a wet bench. If you are flying to Paris for one round on a course you may not play again, this is not the item to gamble on.

## The bag gets wet before you do

The Albatros is a walking course. It is flat — it was a field — and it is entirely manageable on foot, which is how you should play it, because the amphitheatres and the sightlines are the whole point and you see none of them from a buggy path. What that means practically is that your bag spends four hours standing on open ground with nothing over it.

This is the argument for a genuinely waterproof carry bag rather than a good bag with a rain hood, a distinction we have picked apart in [rain hoods versus welded seams](https://ifrothgolf.com/read/waterproof-golf-bag-autumn-decision). A hood protects the grips. It does not protect the pocket with your phone, your passport and the car keys for a hire car you are returning at Orly. The [Titleist Players S4 StaDry](https://ifrothgolf.com/product/titleist-players-s4-stadry) is the catalogue's answer at carry weight: seam-sealed StaDry construction, a four-way top and eight pockets at 2.3kg, which is light enough to walk with and sealed enough to leave standing in the rain on the sixteenth.

## Water on the closing stretch, and the ball you bring

The finish is the famous part. Water runs down the closing stretch — the 15th, the 16th and the par-4 18th all play along the lake, and that is the sequence that decided the 2018 Ryder Cup. It is a genuinely thrilling way to end a round and it is also, for a visiting golfer playing it once, an expensive one.

There is a sensible answer to this that nobody likes saying out loud: play a premium ball you did not pay premium money for. A pack of [Grade A recovered Pro V1s](https://ifrothgolf.com/product/lake-balls-pro-v1) is the same ball the tour plays, recovered, washed and graded, at roughly a third of the price of a new dozen. On a course where you may well hand three of them to a lake, the difference between flinching over the shot and committing to it is worth more than the ball is. Bring more than you think. Everyone does the sums wrong on this hole and nobody does them wrong twice.

The other item that earns its place on this specific course is a laser. The Albatros is an examination of carry distance over water rather than of recovery play, and knowing whether the number is 212 or 197 is the entire decision on several shots. The [Shot Scope PRO ZR](https://ifrothgolf.com/product/shot-scope-pro-zr) does that job with adaptive slope and a tournament-legal off switch, which is the right combination for a course you are seeing for the first time.

## Shoes, and the fact that Paris is half an hour away

One under-discussed advantage of this particular golf trip: the course is around 30 kilometres from central Paris, near Versailles, which means the round is very often bolted onto a city break rather than the other way round. That changes the footwear maths. You are not packing golf shoes and then separately packing shoes — or at least you do not have to.

A spikeless waterproof leather shoe covers both jobs, and the [TRUE Linkswear LUX Pro](https://ifrothgolf.com/product/true-linkswear-lux-pro) is the one in our range built explicitly around walking: full-grain waterproof leather, a superfoam midsole, a 6mm heel-to-toe drop and a two-year waterproof warranty. It handles a flat, soft, walkable stadium course and then behaves in a restaurant in the 6th, which a set of cleats does not.

## What not to bother packing

Skip the heavy winter kit if you are going in the season proper, roughly May to September — this is a northern-French climate, not a Scottish one, and the long days are the reason the season runs when it does. Skip the trolley debate: the course is flat and short on hills, and carrying is the honest way to see the amphitheatres. And skip the idea that you need to play it from the back tees to have played it. The Albatros is a serious test from the championship markers and a thoroughly enjoyable round from the right ones, and the water does not care which set you are on.

The tournament this week is the advert. The thing worth knowing is that unlike almost every other course you will watch on television this year, you can be standing on the first tee of this one with nothing more exotic than a booking and a flight to Orly. Our [what to pack for a golf trip](https://ifrothgolf.com/read/what-to-pack-for-a-golf-trip) checklist covers the rest of the suitcase.

## FAQ

### When is the 2026 Open de France and where is it played?

The FedEx Open de France runs from 24 to 27 September 2026 at Le Golf National in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, about 30 kilometres south-west of Paris. It is a DP World Tour event with a prize fund the tour lists at 3.75 million dollars, played on the Albatros course.

### Can the public play the Le Golf National Ryder Cup course?

Yes. Le Golf National is owned by the French Golf Federation and tee times for all three of its courses, including the Albatros used for the 2018 Ryder Cup and the 2024 Olympic golf, are bookable online by anyone. That makes it one of the very few venues of its stature that a visiting golfer can simply reserve.

### What should you pack to play Le Golf National?

It is a stadium course built on flat, open farmland with no meaningful tree cover, so wind and rain reach you unimpeded: a packable waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers and a genuinely sealed carry bag rather than one relying on a rain hood. Bring spare balls for the water down the closing holes, and a rangefinder, because the course tests carry distance over water more than it tests recovery play.

### Why is Le Golf National called a stadium course?

It was purpose-built as one. Hubert Chesneau and Robert von Hagge opened the Albatros in 1990 on flat farmland, shaping the excavated earth into grass amphitheatres so spectators could watch from above. That design gives the course its television presence and also leaves it exposed, because trees would block the sightlines the mounding was created to provide.
