Junior Golf Club Size Calculator

Junior clubs are sized by height, not age, and a set that's too long is one of the quickest ways to put a child off the game. Enter your child's height in shoes and get the size band, the finished lengths a club that size should measure, the swing speed it's built for, and a heads-up when they're an inch from the next size.

Back against a wall, heels in, head level. Mark it and measure to the floor.

Nearly the next size up. They're within an inch of 51–54 in. If you're buying for a whole season, the next size (driver 34 in) will fit sooner than you think. Choke down a little until it does.

Swing speed check: this size is built for a driver swing up to 50 mph. A faster, stronger player can need a heavier, stiffer set in the same length.

Lengths are the finished lengths of one widely sold junior set at this size, used as the reference. Other brands land within about an inch. Ask the shop for finished length, not the adult size it was cut down from.

How the sizing works

Junior sets are cut in 3-inch height bands, measured with shoes on. The calculator places your child in a band, then shows the finished lengths of a well-fitted club at that size, taken from the maker-published specifications of U.S. Kids Golf's UL7 sets, a widely sold junior range and the only one we found that publishes a length for every band from 39 to 66 inches. Other brands' sets land within about an inch of it. It also shows the driver swing-speed ceiling each size is built for. A stronger child can outgrow the weight and flex of a size before they outgrow the length. And it flags when they're within an inch of the next band, because kids grow out of length long before they wear out a club.

driver 26 in (23°), 7-iron 23 in, putter 20 in; driver swing up to 30 mph.
42–45 in (107–114 cm)
driver 28 in (21°), 7-iron 25 in, putter 21.5 in; driver swing up to 35 mph.
45–48 in (114–122 cm)
driver 30 in (21°), 7-iron 27 in, putter 23 in; driver swing up to 40 mph.
48–51 in (122–130 cm)
driver 32 in (19°), 7-iron 28.5 in, putter 24.5 in; driver swing up to 50 mph.
51–54 in (130–137 cm)
driver 34 in (19°), 7-iron 30.5 in, putter 26 in; driver swing up to 55 mph.
54–57 in (137–145 cm)
driver 36 in (17°), 7-iron 32 in, putter 27.5 in; driver swing up to 60 mph.
57–60 in (145–152 cm)
driver 38 in (17°), 7-iron 33.5 in, putter 29 in; driver swing up to 65 mph.
60–63 in (152–160 cm)
driver 40 in (15°), 7-iron 35 in, putter 30.5 in; driver swing up to 70 mph.
63–66 in (160–168 cm)
driver 42 in (15°), 7-iron 36.5 in, putter 32 in; driver swing up to 75 mph.

Below 39 inches a single lightweight club does more than a set. Above 66 inches, or once a driver swing passes about 90 mph, a child is ready for adult clubs, and a fitting on a launch monitor beats any chart.

Frequently asked

What size golf clubs does my child need?
Go by height, not age. Measure your child in their shoes and match them to a 3-inch height band: for example, a child 51 to 54 inches tall fits a junior driver of about 34 inches and a 7-iron of about 30.5 inches. Two children the same age can be two sizes apart, so an age-based set is a guess.
Should I buy junior clubs a size up so they can grow into them?
Only if they're close to the next band. A club more than an inch or two too long makes a child stand too far away and swing flat, and it builds habits that are hard to undo. If they're within about an inch of the next size, sizing up for a season is reasonable. Have them grip down slightly until they grow into it.
How often do kids need new golf clubs?
Re-measure every 4 to 6 months while they're growing. Each junior size covers only 3 inches of height, and children outgrow the length long before the clubs wear out, which is why ranges like U.S. Kids Golf also sell single clubs in every size.
When can a junior switch to adult golf clubs?
When they're taller than the largest junior size (about 66 inches, or 5 ft 6 in) or their driver swing speed passes about 90 mph. At that point the next step is short adult or ladies' lengths, and a proper fitting is worth more than any chart.
Should I measure my child with shoes on?
Yes. Junior sizing charts are built on height in golf shoes, so measure with their usual shoes on: back against a wall, heels in, head level, then mark the top of the head and measure to the floor.
