The plain-English meaning of the golf-gear jargon that actually affects what you buy — from smash factor and MOI to compression, bounce and zero-torque. Each term is defined in a sentence, then linked to where it matters.
Ball flight & launch data
The numbers a launch monitor gives you — and what they actually mean for your game.
- Launch angle
- Launch angle is the vertical angle, in degrees, at which the ball leaves the clubface relative to the ground. It's a primary driver of carry distance: too low and the ball won't hold the air, too high and it climbs without going forward. Optimal driver launch for most amateurs is roughly 12–17°.It's one of the first numbers a launch monitor shows you, and pairing the right launch with the right spin is how you find your longest carry.
- Spin rate
- Spin rate is how fast the ball rotates backwards after impact, measured in RPM. It controls how long the ball stays airborne and how much it stops on landing. Too much driver spin (over ~3,000 rpm for many players) balloons the flight and costs distance; wedges want lots of spin to bite the green.
- Ball speed
- Ball speed is how fast the ball leaves the face immediately after impact, in mph. It's the biggest single distance factor — more ball speed means more potential distance. It comes from clubhead speed plus quality of strike, and it's the number most driver marketing chases.
- Smash factor
- Smash factor is ball speed divided by clubhead speed — a measure of how efficiently you transfer energy at impact. A driver strike near the centre tops out around 1.50; mishits drop it. It's the cleanest way a launch monitor tells you whether you're finding the middle of the face.It's one of the most useful readouts on a personal launch monitor because it isolates strike quality from raw speed.
- Carry vs total distance
- Carry is how far the ball flies through the air before its first bounce; total distance adds the roll after landing. Carry is the number that matters for clearing hazards and holding greens, because roll depends on turf, slope and conditions you can't count on.
- Angle of attack
- Angle of attack is whether the clubhead is moving down, level or up at impact, in degrees. Hitting up on the driver (a positive angle) launches it higher with less spin for more distance; irons are struck with a downward angle to compress the ball and take a divot after it.
- Apex
- Apex is the highest point the ball reaches in flight, given as a height. It reflects the combination of launch and spin: a sensible apex helps the ball land softly and stop, while a very low apex runs out and a ballooning apex loses carry into wind.
- Dispersion
- Dispersion is how spread-out your shots are around the target — the size of your shot pattern rather than a single 'best' shot. It's the honest measure of a club's forgiveness for you: a club that tightens dispersion saves more scores than one that adds a couple of yards to your longest drive.
Club design
The engineering terms behind why one club is more forgiving, or longer, than another.
- Loft
- Loft is the angle of the clubface relative to vertical, in degrees. More loft launches the ball higher and shorter, less loft lower and further. It's why a sand wedge (around 54–56°) flies high and short and a driver (around 9–12°) flies low and long.
- Lie angle
- Lie angle is the angle between the shaft and the ground when the club is soled correctly. - MOI (Moment of Inertia)
- MOI, or moment of inertia, is the clubhead's resistance to twisting on off-centre hits. Higher MOI means the face stays squarer on mishits, so miss-struck shots lose less speed and stay straighter. It's the engineering term behind the word 'forgiveness'.
- Centre of gravity (CG)
- Centre of gravity is the balance point of the clubhead. A lower, deeper CG launches the ball higher with more forgiveness; a CG moved forward or toward the toe/heel changes spin and shot shape. Movable weights on modern drivers are simply ways to shift the CG.
- Offset
- Offset is how far the leading edge of the face sits behind the hosel. More offset gives your hands a split-second longer to square the face, which helps fight a slice — common on game-improvement irons and forgiving drivers, and minimal on players' clubs.
- Adjustable hosel
- An adjustable hosel is a sleeve where the head meets the shaft that lets you change a driver or fairway wood's loft and lie by a degree or two. It fine-tunes launch and shot bias without a new club, and is standard on nearly all modern adjustable drivers.It's a big reason today's drivers can be dialled to your swing after you buy.
- Cavity back vs blade
- A cavity-back iron hollows out the back to push weight to the perimeter for higher MOI and forgiveness; a blade (muscle-back) keeps the mass compact behind the centre for feel and workability at the cost of forgiveness. Most amateurs are better served by cavity-backs.
- Bounce
- Bounce is the angle on the sole of a wedge that keeps the leading edge from digging into turf or sand. More bounce suits steep swings and soft conditions; less bounce suits shallow swings and firm turf. Shafts & fitting
The words a fitter uses — flex, torque, lie — and why the fit matters more than the head.
- Shaft flex
- Flex is how much the shaft bends during the swing, labelled roughly Ladies, Senior, Regular, Stiff and Extra-Stiff. It should match your swing speed and tempo: too flexible and the ball flies high and left, too stiff and it flies low and right. Flex is a fitting decision, not a fixed rule by handicap.
- Kick point
- Kick point (or bend point) is where a shaft flexes most. A low kick point helps launch the ball higher; a high kick point produces a lower, more penetrating flight. It's a finer fitting lever than flex, used to tune trajectory.
- Torque
- Torque is how much a shaft twists along its length under load, in degrees. Lower torque feels stiffer and more stable (favoured by faster swingers); higher torque feels softer and smoother. It works alongside flex to shape feel and dispersion.
- Swing weight
- Swing weight measures how heavy a club feels as you swing it — the balance of head weight against total weight — on a letter-number scale like D2. Two clubs of the same total weight can feel very different; consistent swing weight through a set keeps your tempo repeatable.
- Gapping
- Gapping is making sure your clubs produce even distance steps with no big overlaps or holes — for example, a consistent 10–15 yards between irons. Putters & the green
Toe hang, zero-torque, face-balanced: the vocabulary of the flat stick.
- Zero-torque putter
- A zero-torque putter is designed so the face barely twists open and closed through the stroke, by positioning the shaft and weight so gravity doesn't force the head to rotate. The result is a straighter, more repeatable roll that flatters players who fight face rotation. - Toe hang
- Toe hang is how far the toe of a putter droops when you balance the shaft on a finger. More toe hang suits a stroke that opens and closes (an arc); it tells you which putter design matches how your stroke naturally moves.
- Face-balanced
- A face-balanced putter is one whose face points at the sky when you balance the shaft — the opposite end of the scale from toe hang. It suits a straight-back-straight-through stroke with minimal face rotation, and is common in mallet designs.
- Mallet vs blade putter
- A blade putter is compact and traditional with lower MOI and more feel; a mallet is larger with weight pushed to the perimeter for higher MOI, more forgiveness and easier alignment. Mallets flatter most amateurs; blades reward a consistent stroke.
- Putter insert
- A putter insert is a face made of a softer material (often a polymer or milled aluminium) set into the head to change sound and feel and, in some designs, to promote a smoother roll. It's why two putters of the same shape can feel completely different at impact.
Golf balls
Compression, cover, construction — how a ball is built and who it suits.
- Compression
- Compression is how much a golf ball squashes at impact, given as a number (roughly 30–100+). Lower-compression balls feel softer and help slower swings, higher-compression balls suit faster swings and give more control. Matching compression to your swing speed is the starting point for choosing a ball.It's the first thing to get right when you match the ball to your game.
- Urethane vs Surlyn cover
- Urethane is the soft cover on premium balls (like the Pro V1) that grips the grooves for high greenside spin and control; Surlyn (ionomer) is the firmer, more durable cover on value balls that gives less spin and a lower price. - Ball construction (piece count)
- Piece count is how many layers a ball has. Two-piece balls are firm, durable and distance-focused; three- and four-piece balls add layers to separate low long-game spin from high short-game spin, giving tour-level control. More pieces means more tuning, usually at a higher price.
- Greenside spin
- Greenside spin is how much a ball checks and stops on short shots around the green. It comes mostly from a soft urethane cover interacting with your wedge grooves. High greenside spin lets you stop the ball by the pin; low-spin distance balls release and run out.
Tech & buying
Rangefinders, launch monitors and the jargon on the box before you spend.
- Rangefinder slope
- Slope is a rangefinder feature that adjusts the distance for uphill or downhill shots, telling you the 'plays-like' yardage. It's great for practice but must be switched off (many have a toggle) to be legal in competition. - Pin-lock (target lock)
- Pin-lock is a rangefinder feature that confirms — usually with a vibration or on-screen jolt — that the laser has locked onto the flag rather than the trees behind it. It's the difference between a confident number and a guess, and it's worth prioritising on a laser rangefinder.
- GPS vs laser rangefinder
- A laser rangefinder points at a target and gives an exact distance to it; a GPS watch or handheld shows preloaded distances to the front, middle and back of the green without aiming. - Personal launch monitor
- A personal launch monitor is a consumer device that measures ball and club data (speed, launch, spin, carry) at home or on the range, at a fraction of the price of the tour-truck units. - Radar vs photometric launch monitor

- Impact screen
- An impact screen is a heavy-duty fabric screen that absorbs full-speed golf shots while a projector displays the simulator picture onto it. - Hitting mat
- A hitting mat is the artificial turf surface you hit from in a home or indoor setup. Quality matters more than any other budget line: a good mat protects wrists and elbows by letting the club skid through impact, while a thin mat punishes joints and exaggerates fat strikes.
- Off-course golf
- Off-course golf is playing or practising the game away from a traditional course — driving ranges, home and commercial simulators, and entertainment venues like Topgolf. - Shot tracking

- What golf equipment terms should a beginner learn first?

- What is a good smash factor?
