Nine holes is golf's best product, and nobody's selling it
Four and a half hours is a day out. Two is a habit. Guess which one golf keeps pushing.
TakeSomewhere along the way golf decided that eighteen holes is a round and nine is an apology. You can hear it at any club. "Just getting a quick nine in." Just. Quick. As if the round needs a permission slip, as if the real golfers are somewhere behind you doing the proper amount.
Meanwhile every force in a modern adult's life points the other way. Nobody has four and a half hours plus the drive plus the warm-up plus the one at the bar afterwards. That's not a hobby, that's a day trip, and it's why every lapsed golfer you know tells you the same thing: they didn't fall out of love with golf, they fell out of a Saturday.
But the two hours after work in summer? Everyone has that. Twilight rates make it the cheapest golf on the sheet. The course is empty, you play in two and a bit hours at a walk, and the last three holes happen in that flat gold light that's the actual reason humans invented the sport. It's the best golf of the week and it's priced and marketed like the leftovers.
Run the comparison anywhere else and it's absurd. Nobody calls a 5k half a marathon. Nobody's told at the counter that the real coffee experience is four flat whites back to back. Only golf looks at its most accessible format and treats it like a demo version.
And before the traditionalists arrive, a reminder that the founders played whatever the land gave them. The Old Course was twenty-two holes until St Andrews decided it wasn't. Eighteen isn't scripture. It's a renovation that got lucky.
Golf spends millions asking why participation leaks between June and September. The answer's on the tee sheet at 5.40pm, walking briskly, carrying half a bag.
Eighteen is a day out. Nine is a habit. Sell the habit.

I bought a putting mat in December. It dries jumpers now.
