The ifrothgolf review

In-depth reviewRead our full PXG Lightning Fairway Wood review8.1/10

PXG spent its first decade being the brand you'd heard of and never hit, because the clubs cost more than the rest of the bag and the only way to buy one was to book a fitting. Lightning is the line where that changes. The metalwoods family — four drivers, two fairway woods and a hybrid — arrived on 2 December 2025, and the fairway wood sits at $400, which is ordinary money for a premium 3-wood rather than the eye-watering figure the badge used to carry. What you get for it is fitting range, which is genuinely where PXG has always been strong. Six lofts run from a 15-degree 3-wood out to a 27-degree 11-wood, each on an eight-way adjustable hosel, and the sole carries three weight ports loaded with two 2.5g weights and a 12.5g weight — heavy weight to the back for forgiveness, to the toe against a hook, to the heel to take the edge off a slice. The head itself is a squared, high-MOI shape under a carbon crown, and PXG has thinned the face perimeter by 12.5 per cent against the Black Ops fairway it replaces so it deforms about 4 per cent more at impact. The honest caveats are shape and route to purchase: Golf Monthly's tester liked almost everything but flagged that the straighter sole camber won't suit every eye, and this is still a custom build — you're ordering a spec, not pulling one off a rack.
