Ryan Fox's WITB: the Open won on week-old metalwoods
Fox took the 2026 Open at Royal Birkdale with a Srixon driver and 3-wood that had only just left the truck — and one Ping putter that breaks up an otherwise all-Srixon bag.
By Jordan Hale · Equipment Writer
Ryan Fox won the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale on 19 July with a birdie at the last, playing metalwoods that were barely in circulation. The ZXi RKT LS+ driver launched at the Travelers in June and the matching 3-wood appeared the week before at the Scottish Open.
He is Srixon's flagship player and the bag reflects it almost completely — a blended ZXi iron set, Cleveland wedges, a Z-Star XV ball. The exception is the putter, a 40-inch Ping Anser 2D built with an 8-iron shaft.

The story of the bag
Winning a major on metalwoods that recent is unusual — golf.com framed it as the first major won with a Srixon metalwood since 2023. Both heads had weeks, not seasons, of tour use behind them.
Some coverage still tags the driver and 3-wood as prototypes. They are not: both had launched by the time of the Open, and the prototype label is simply stale on pages that have not been rebuilt since.
