The Nicklaus-designed World Cup Course is where the Mission Hills story began, and where big-time golf arrived in China: it hosted the 1995 World Cup of Golf, won by the American pair of Fred Couples and Davis Love III. It's the headline layout among the dozen at the Shenzhen resort, a set otherwise attributed to a roll-call including Greg Norman, Ernie Els, Annika Sörenstam, Nick Faldo, José María Olazábal, Pete Dye and Chinese trailblazer Zhang Lianwei.

Beyond Blackstone, Haikou's ten courses give a genuine variety of golf in one place — the Sandbelt Trails course is modelled on the firm, strategic bunkering of Australia's Melbourne Sandbelt, while others (Lava Fields among them) lean into the volcanic terrain. It's the closest thing in golf to a theme park of course styles, all bookable on one stay.
Two resorts: Shenzhen and Hainan
Mission Hills is really two destinations under one name. The Shenzhen resort, in Guangdong province right on the Hong Kong border, is the original — founded in 1992 and later recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's largest golf facility, with a dozen courses spread across an enormous estate. The Haikou resort, opened in 2010 on the tropical island of Hainan, added ten more courses built across old volcanic lava fields, plus mineral springs, hotels and a film-studio-and-leisure complex.
Hainan is China's leisure island — its warm, beach-resort south-east coast has become the country's golf and holiday capital — while Shenzhen suits a golf add-on to a Hong Kong or Pearl River Delta trip. Decide which resort to base at by where else you're travelling.
How to play Mission Hills (access)
This is fully public, resort-style golf — there's no membership hurdle. You book a tee time and, typically, stay at one of the on-site hotels, with golf carts and caddies standard on the course. Green fees vary by course and season, so check current rates and book ahead, particularly around the resort's tournament weeks. Because the complexes are so large, it's easy to play several different courses over a few days without leaving the estate.
When to go
Both resorts play year-round, but the climate is the thing to plan around. Shenzhen is subtropical and Hainan is genuinely tropical, so May to September is hot, very humid and wet, with a real typhoon risk (roughly June to September). The cooler, drier months from October to April are far more comfortable for golf — pleasant temperatures and lower humidity — which is why that's the peak window, especially on Hainan.
Getting there
For Shenzhen, fly into Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX) or route via Hong Kong (HKG) and cross the border — the resort is well connected to both. For Haikou on Hainan, fly into Haikou Meilan (HAK), a short drive from the resort; Hainan has extensive domestic connections and a growing set of international routes. A tropical beach island and a world-scale golf resort in one trip is a strong pairing.
