Rick Shiels' WITB: the mixed bag of golf's biggest YouTuber

Four brands, no club contract. Shiels can play anything he wants and deliberately doesn't play a matching set — which makes his bag the closest thing in golf to an honest buying guide.

Rick Shiels is the rarest thing in golf equipment: someone with access to every club made and no manufacturer telling him which to game. He has turned down club contracts throughout his career, so the bag is a genuine four-brand mix — a TaylorMade driver and irons, a Callaway 3-wood, Titleist utility, wedges and ball, and a Ping putter he was fitted for on camera.

That is the whole reason this bag is worth reading. A staffer's bag tells you who pays them. Shiels' bag tells you what a PGA-qualified coach who tests clubs for a living actually chose, and the choices don't flatter any single brand.

  • TaylorMade Qi4D Driver

    Driver

    TaylorMade Qi4D

    9° · Fujikura Ventus Black 6X

Replaced the Qi35 LS — he was after the spin number without losing distance.

  • Callaway Elyte Titanium

    3-wood

    Callaway Elyte Titanium

    15°, set to 17° · Tensei 1K Black 75 X

Bent weak enough that it plays more like a 4-wood. The titanium head is a different model from the standard Elyte fairway.

  • Titleist U500

    Driving iron

    Titleist U500

    3-iron · Project X 6.5

A long-time favourite he has started to question after some inconsistent results — a slot to watch rather than a settled pick.

  • TaylorMade P7CB

    Irons

    TaylorMade P7CB

4-PW · True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100

In the bag since August 2024 — the most stable part of a setup he admits he used to change too often.

  • Titleist Vokey SM11 Wedge

    Wedges

    Titleist Vokey SM11

    50°, 54°, 58°

Switched up from SM10s; he prefers the reduced glare off the toe and heel.

  • PingPutter

    Putter

    Ping PLD Custom

A bespoke build from a filmed Ping PLD fitting rather than an off-the-rack model — his favourite club in the bag.

  • GolfGrips

    Grips

    Golf Pride +4

  • Titleist Pro V1 Golf Balls (Dozen)

The story of the bag

"I've always been a fan of mixed bags because I just don't believe that any one brand does perfect everything," Shiels told Today's Golfer. Four manufacturers across 14 clubs is him acting on that.

Worth being precise about what "unsponsored" means here: Shiels has no club manufacturer contract, but he is not deal-free. He works with Lyle & Scott on apparel and Ecco on shoes, his studio bags come from Vessel, and he signed a LIV Golf ambassador role in 2026. The clubs are the part nobody is paying for.

The one genuinely unsettled slot is the Titleist U500 driving iron. He has said he's questioning it without having found a replacement, so if this bag changes next, that's where.
