J.J. Spaun's WITB: the mixed bag that won a U.S. Open

A Srixon staffer playing a Titleist driver, TaylorMade woods and a putter he had no contract for — then he holed a 64-footer at Oakmont and made L.A.B. Golf famous.

J.J. Spaun's bag is one of the least tidy on tour, and that's exactly why it's interesting. He's a Srixon and Cleveland staff player — irons, wedges and ball — but the driver is a Titleist, the fairway woods are TaylorMade, and the club that made him a major champion was a putter he wasn't paid a penny to play.

At Oakmont in June 2025 he shot 40 on the front nine on Sunday, came home in 32, and holed a putt of 64 feet 5 inches on the last to win the U.S. Open at one under — the only player in the field under par all week. The putter in his hands was a L.A.B. Golf DF3, the first L.A.B. putter ever to win a men's major, and at the time L.A.B. had no deal with him. They signed him nine months later.

The story of the bag

The best story in this bag is a club that isn't in it any more. After winning, the USGA asked Spaun to donate a club to its museum. He refused to give them the putter — "that thing is not ready to be retired, especially after that putt" — and handed over the Titleist GT3 driver instead. His reason is pure gear-nerd gold: the face was creeping toward the legal CT limit and "ended up being kind of unusable anyway." He saved the putter from a display case in June 2025, then benched it himself eleven months later.

And that benching wasn't about performance — it was about paint. The DF3's platinum finish wore down in the Arizona sun until he could no longer see the alignment aid, so in May 2026 he switched to a L.A.B. OZ.1i HS: same torque profile, heel-shafted, a firmer milled steel insert, shaft lean taken from 2° to 0°. He gained more than a stroke putting over the next two rounds. A purely visual change to a club that had won a major.

The wedges tell you he thinks for himself. Cleveland launched the RTZ as the RTX 6's successor in January 2025, and Spaun — a Cleveland staffer — put it in at 54° only, keeping RTX 6 heads at 50° and 60°. Most staff players take the whole new family. He took the one head that beat what he already had.

On the Ryder Cup ball rumour: Spaun was benched for both foursomes sessions at Bethpage, and a commentator suggested it was because he was the only American on a Srixon ball. Spaun flatly denied it — "it had nothing to do with what equipment I played" — and captain Keegan Bradley's stated reason was wanting veterans in foursomes. He still went 2-1-0 and beat Sepp Straka in Sunday singles.

Frequently asked

What driver does J.J. Spaun use?
A Titleist GT3 at 9° with a Fujikura Ventus Black VeloCore+ 6X shaft — despite being a Srixon and Cleveland staff player. The exact head he won the 2025 U.S. Open with now sits in the USGA museum, because the face was creeping toward the legal CT limit and was close to unusable anyway.
What putter does J.J. Spaun use?
A L.A.B. Golf mallet at 34 inches, 70° lie, on a L.A.B. x TPT graphite shaft with a Scotty Cameron grip. He won the 2025 U.S. Open with the centre-shafted DF3 — the first L.A.B. putter to win a men's major — then switched to the heel-shafted OZ.1i HS in May 2026.
What golf ball does J.J. Spaun play?
The Srixon Z-Star Diamond.
Why did J.J. Spaun stop using his U.S. Open-winning putter?
Not performance — cosmetics. The DF3's platinum finish wore off in the Arizona sun until he could no longer see the alignment aid at address. The OZ.1i HS he replaced it with has the same torque profile, so it was effectively a fresh coat of paint rather than a new putter.
Was L.A.B. Golf sponsoring J.J. Spaun when he won the U.S. Open?
No — and that's the sharpest detail in the whole story. The DF3 won the 2025 U.S. Open as a non-contracted club in a Srixon staff bag. L.A.B. Golf only signed him on 31 March 2026, more than nine months after the putt that made the brand famous.
